Restore and Maintain Good Vision and Eye Health Naturally
As the legend goes, the British Royal Air Force pilots, after eating bilberry jam for tea, bombed the enemies during WWII with devastating accuracy, their night vision enhanced by the powers of the inky blue fruit.
Although the legend has never been confirmed, the blueberry continues to be a subject of affection among scientists for its abundance of anthocyanosides, a kind of chemical compound with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Bilberry
What is bilberry? It sounds a lot like blueberry, and rightfully so, as it’s a relative to the benefit-rich blueberry and is most commonly used to make jams and pies. But did you know it’s also been used for centuries in medicine and food?
Historically, bilberry fruit was used to treat diarrhea, scurvy, and other conditions. Today, the fruit is used as a traditional remedy for diarrhea, eye problems, varicose veins, poor circulation, and even cancer prevention.
What makes this berry so phenomenal is that it contains naturally-producing chemicals known as anthocyanosises. Anthocyanosises are plant pigments that have powerful antioxidant properties. One study showed that bilberry had positive effects on vision in lower-light environments. These antioxidants scavenge the body for free radicals, with the intention of helping to prevent or reverse damaged cells.
Lutein
Lutein is an antioxidant belonging to a group called carotenoids, which make the bright yellow, red and orange colors in fruits, vegetables, and other plants. Lutein is often found working alongside another carotenoid called zeaxanthin.
While lutein’s antioxidant effects can occur anywhere in the body, most of this nutrient’s activity is concentrated in the eyes. Of the many types of carotenoids in our bodies, only lutein and zeaxanthin are found in a specific region of the eye called the macula, which is responsible for maintaining central vision. In the eye, lutein’s role as an antioxidant lowers the activity of free radicals, which can cause damage to the macula and other parts of the eye. Along with zeaxanthin, it helps to absorb harmful high-energy blue light to protect and maintain healthy eyes. Getting adequate amounts of lutein may lower the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
